Dear Mr. Køpcke,
Your letter has just arrived,
and I am absolutely amazed and
bewildered to read it.
M. Nicolaus had to be more
presice and responsible in his
information. We agreed on this
exhibition according to certain
terms and conditions, and it
is not my fault if he does not
know what he is talking
about. The first thing we
discussed were the prices; 4000 FR
the point, which are my prices here.
He said it was perfectly all
right, and even rather low
prices, since some other people
ask for 8.000 the point. (This, by
the way is my price in the New York
gallery.) I would never have accepted
to have this changed in the last
moment. Please understand, dear
Mr. Køpcke, that I don't in
the least consider your gallery a
social institution, but a very
normal gallery, with very
normal conditions. It is a
pity you have bad experiences
with some people, but it is
not my fault; I am used to
accept what people say
seriously, and not have it
changed in the last moment,
after I went into expenses. It
must be all the fault of M.
Nicolaus. Same for the catalogue.
He came to ask for the photos
a week after you wrote him to
ask for them! Same thing happened
with the news of my work having
arrived. He did not bother to say
anything until after I sent a
telegramme. I send you the
photos immediately upon receiving
your demand. However, never mind
for that. Let it be an ordinary
invitation.
You will find out, Mr. Køpcke,
that my work sells very well and
is worth while for you to
show. I have had many
shows by now, and know..
You will find the agreed
prices perfectly right, that
is 1700 kr. for a 30 F for
you. Out of which you take
your percentage. Mr. Nicolaus
said it was from 25% to 28%.
I hope he did not go wrong
there too. However, since you
asked for it, let us make it
30% for you. That leaves 1.190
kr. for you = 30 F for myself. The
very minimum I can accept for
myself will be of 1.150 KR for
a 30 F for myself. The rest for
you. However, pictures under 25
can not go lower than 4.000 the
point (For the gallery) I assure
you, Mr. Køpcke, that all
this is exceptional for me.
My very best wishes, H. Ben Dov
